Mayor needs political capital, taxpayer cash to seize schools (Feb. 27, 2014)

If Mayor Byron W. Brown wants to take control of the Buffalo school system, he is going to have to spend political capital – and taxpayer money.

Property taxpayers in Yonkers, whose mayor exerts influence over that city’s school district, fund 41 percent of the school system’s budget.

Buffalo taxpayers, by contrast, now fund only about 8 percent of the city school district budget.

UB’s Robert Shibley receives lifetime achievement award for public architecture (Feb. 21, 2014)

You might say that Robert G. Shibley mapped Buffalo’s rebirth.

Over the past three decades, through thousands of public meetings and private conversations, he helped to plan the city’s resurgence. You can see his imprint on the waterfront. In the medical campus. In fact, the entire downtown corridor.

Now, as many of the plans Shibley spearheaded begin to visibly transform the cityscape, one of the lead architects of Buffalo’s resurgence is stepping into the national spotlight. Read more

Calabrese joins New York Wireless board
(Ken-Ton Bee, May 14, 2013)

The New York State Wireless Association has appointed Carl J. Calabrese, Tonawanda resident and partner with Buffalo-based Masiello, Martucci, Calabrese and Associates, to its board of directors.

Calabrese is an active lobbyist at the state level in the areas of Medicaid reform, emergency communications and government reform and reorganization.

He has been involved in government and politics in Western New York for more than 30 years. As an elected high-ranking Republican Party official, Calabrese has built relationships with government officials at the local, state, and federal levels of government.

First elected as a Councilman in the Town of Tonawanda in 1986, he then served as Town Supervisor from 1993-2000. During his tenure in town government, Calabrese faced a number of issues: waterfront development, nuclear waste clean-up, economic development and environmental issues.

From 2000-2005, Calabrese served as Erie County Deputy County Executive. In this capacity, he was an active participant in a wide range of county issues that involved coordination with state and federal officials and organizations. He was the only public official in New York State to serve on a special Homeland Security task force established by the National Association of Counties.

He has also served as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo since 2001, teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in the fields of governance and public policy formulation in the School of Architecture and Planning.
